Ring spinning

Ring spinning is a yarn-making process in which drafted fibers are twisted by a traveler around a rotating spindle and wound onto a bobbin. Its continuous twist-and-winding arrangement produces strong, versatile yarn.

Drafting (textile manufacturing): The controlled attenuation of a fiber strand by rollers moving at different speeds. Drafting thins the fiber strand before the spindle and traveler insert twist.
Roving: A slightly twisted, attenuated strand of staple fibers prepared for spinning. Ring frames commonly receive roving as the feedstock that drafting further thins.
Rotor spinning: A spinning method that forms yarn by collecting fibers in a rapidly rotating rotor. Rotor spinning avoids the ring-and-traveler winding arrangement and generally runs faster.
Ring-spun cotton: Cotton yarn made by ring spinning, typically valued for strength and a soft hand. It is a familiar product whose feel and durability reflect ring-spun construction.
Ring spinning frame: A textile machine that drafts fibers, inserts twist with a spindle and traveler, and winds yarn onto bobbins. This machine embodies the ring-spinning system in an industrial frame.
Spindle (textile machinery): A rotating shaft in a spinning frame that supports the yarn package and helps insert twist. The spindle rotates the bobbin while yarn twist is formed above it.
Staple fiber: A fiber of finite length, such as cotton or cut synthetic fiber, used to make spun yarn. The process gathers and twists short fibers rather than drawing one continuous filament.
Air-jet spinning: A spinning method that uses compressed air to wrap fibers around a yarn core. Its air-generated wrapper fibers create a different yarn structure from ring-inserted twist.
Denim: A durable woven cotton fabric characterized by a twill weave, often made with indigo-dyed warp yarns. Ring-spun yarn is used in denim when a softer, textured surface is desired.
John Thorp (inventor): An American inventor associated with the development of the ring spinning frame in the nineteenth century. Thorp’s machine helped establish the ring-based approach to continuous yarn spinning.
