Ripple marks

Ripple marks are ridges and troughs formed as water or wind moves loose sediment. Preserved on bedding surfaces, they record the conditions and direction of sediment transport.

Current ripple: An asymmetrical ripple formed by flow moving predominantly in one direction across sediment. Its steeper lee face and gentler stoss slope can indicate the direction of current flow.
Sediment: Loose particles of mineral, rock, or biological material that can be transported and deposited. Ripple marks develop in loose sediment before burial or cementation preserves them.
Paleocurrent analysis: The reconstruction of ancient flow directions from sedimentary structures and other geological evidence. Asymmetric current ripples can preserve a record of the direction sediment moved.
Hummocky cross-stratification: A broad, low-angle sedimentary structure commonly associated with storm-generated combined flows. It records storm-related bed shaping rather than the smaller, regular ripple forms.
Wave ripple: A ripple formed by oscillating water motion, commonly beneath surface waves. Its roughly symmetrical profile distinguishes back-and-forth motion from a one-way current.
Grain size: A measure of the diameter of particles in sediment or sedimentary rock. Particle size influences the flow speed needed to move grains and build ripples.
Sedimentary facies: A body of rock characterized by features that reflect its depositional environment. Ripple types help distinguish environments such as flowing channels, shorelines, and tidal flats.
Mud cracks: Polygonal cracks formed when wet, fine-grained sediment dries and contracts. Their association with ripples can indicate alternating inundation and exposure.
Bedform: A sedimentary feature shaped by fluid flow across a bed of loose particles. Ripple marks belong to the smaller bedforms produced by moving water or air.
Bedding plane: A surface separating successive beds or layers in sedimentary rock. Ripple marks are commonly preserved on bedding planes as casts or impressions.
