Riss glaciation

A major Pleistocene glacial stage in the Alps, traditionally dated to roughly 300,000–130,000 years ago and broadly correlated with the Saalian glaciation.

Glacial cycle: A recurring pattern of global cooling, ice-sheet growth, and warming during an ice age. The Riss stage was one advance within the Pleistocene sequence of glacial cycles.
Albrecht Penck: A German geographer and geologist who helped establish the classical Alpine glaciation sequence. Penck and Eduard Brückner introduced the Riss stage in their influential Alpine scheme.
Saalian glaciation: A Middle Pleistocene glacial complex in northern Europe, traditionally dated broadly around 300,000–130,000 years ago. It is the northern European counterpart most often correlated with the Alpine Riss.
Lake Constance: A large freshwater lake at the borders of Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, shaped by Quaternary glaciation. Its basin and surrounding deposits record repeated advances of Alpine ice.
Marine isotope stage: A numbered interval in a chronology derived from oxygen-isotope variations in marine sediment cores. Marine isotope stages provide a framework for testing the traditional Riss–Saalian age correlation.
Alpine glaciation: The growth and movement of glaciers across the Alps and their surrounding regions. Riss names a major glacial stage within this regional history.
Eduard Brückner: A German geographer and climatologist known for research on Alpine glaciation and climate. Brückner co-developed the classification that gave the Riss its traditional place.
Mindel glaciation: A glacial stage in the classical Alpine sequence, preceding the Riss glaciation. The Mindel is the earlier named Alpine stage against which Riss deposits are distinguished.
Iller: A river in southern Germany that flows north from the Alps to the Danube. Glacial deposits along the Iller help trace the northern reach of Alpine ice.
Luminescence dating: A method that estimates when mineral grains were last exposed to sunlight or heat. It can date glacial sediments that lack material suitable for radiocarbon dating.
