River Forth

The River Forth is a river in central Scotland that flows east into the Firth of Forth, passing through Stirling and forming part of Scotland’s central lowlands.

Firth of Forth: The estuary of the River Forth on Scotland’s east coast, opening into the North Sea. The river widens into this estuary as it reaches the coast.
Tidal bore: A wave that travels upriver when an incoming tide is funnelled into a shallow, narrowing estuary. The Forth can produce a bore where the incoming tide meets its upriver channel.
Battle of Stirling Bridge: A 1297 battle in which Scottish forces led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray defeated an English army near Stirling. The River Forth’s crossing point constrained the armies’ movements.
Forth Bridge: A railway bridge spanning the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry. Its construction transformed rail travel across the river estuary.
Stirling: A city in central Scotland, located near the River Forth’s tidal limit. The river bends around Stirling, where its tidal reach ends.

River Teith: A river in central Scotland that joins the River Forth near Stirling. Its waters are among the main tributaries entering the Forth upstream of Stirling.
Tidal range: The vertical difference between high tide and low tide at a given place. Tidal range influences water levels and currents in the Forth’s estuary.
