RNA-dependent RNA polymerase

An enzyme that synthesizes RNA from an RNA template. It is central to replication of many RNA viruses and to RNA silencing in some organisms.

RNA polymerase: An enzyme that synthesizes RNA using a nucleic-acid template. This broader enzyme family includes polymerases that copy RNA templates.
Remdesivir: An antiviral nucleotide analogue used to treat COVID-19 and other viral infections. Its active metabolite interferes with RNA synthesis by several viral polymerases.

RNA-dependent DNA polymerase: An enzyme that synthesizes DNA from an RNA template. It uses RNA as a template too, but produces DNA rather than RNA.
Sofosbuvir: An antiviral nucleotide analogue used in combination therapies for hepatitis C. It inhibits the hepatitis C virus polymerase that copies its RNA genome.
RNA nucleotide: A ribose-containing nucleotide used to build RNA. The polymerase selects and links these building blocks during synthesis.
Hepatitis C virus NS5B: The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase that replicates the hepatitis C virus genome. Its structure and inhibition established a major route to direct-acting antivirals.
RNA virus evolution: Changes in RNA-virus populations across generations through mutation, selection, and drift. Polymerase errors supply much of the variation on which evolution acts.
