Road bicycle racing

Road bicycle racing is competitive cycling on paved roads, contested in one-day races and multi-stage events. Results depend on speed, endurance, tactics, and cooperation within teams.

Peloton: The main group of riders traveling together in a road race. Riders conserve energy by drafting in the peloton and use its movement to shape attacks.
One-day cycling race: A cycling competition decided in a single race from start to finish. One-day races reward riders who can time their effort for a single decisive finish.
Tour de France: An annual men's professional stage race held mainly in France. Its mountain stages, time trials, and overall contest make it the best-known stage race.
Track cycling: Bicycle racing on a banked, purpose-built oval track. Track events take place on a controlled circuit rather than open roads.
Drafting: Riding close behind another cyclist to reduce aerodynamic drag. Shelter in another rider’s slipstream lets a team conserve effort for decisive moments.
Stage race: A multi-day race made up of separate stages, with an overall classification. Stage races add cumulative time and recovery demands to individual stage results.
Giro d'Italia: An annual men's professional stage race held mainly in Italy. The Giro’s demanding route is one of the sport’s three Grand Tours.
Mountain biking: Cycling over rough, often unpaved terrain using purpose-built bicycles. Mountain biking replaces paved-road tactics with technical off-road handling.
Breakaway: A small group or solo rider separated ahead of the main field. Breakaways test whether the peloton can cooperate long enough to catch the escapees.
Individual time trial: A race in which cyclists start separately and compete against the clock. Time trials measure an individual’s speed without the shelter of a group.
