Robben Island

Robben Island is an island in Table Bay, South Africa, best known as a prison where the apartheid government incarcerated political opponents, including Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela: Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid leader who became the country’s first Black president. He spent 18 years imprisoned on the island, much of it in a small cell.
Dutch East India Company: The Dutch East India Company was a chartered trading company that controlled Dutch colonial activity in parts of Asia and southern Africa. Its Cape settlement began colonial administration that later used the island for confinement.
Rivonia Trial: The Rivonia Trial was the 1963–1964 South African prosecution of anti-apartheid leaders, including Nelson Mandela. Its convictions sent several movement leaders to imprisonment on Robben Island.
African National Congress: The African National Congress is a South African political party and former liberation movement founded in 1912. Many prominent Robben Island prisoners were ANC leaders or members.
Pollsmoor Prison: Pollsmoor Prison is a prison in Cape Town where Nelson Mandela was held after Robben Island. Mandela’s transfer there in 1982 marked a less isolated phase of his imprisonment.
Walter Sisulu: Walter Sisulu was a South African anti-apartheid activist and African National Congress leader. He was imprisoned on the island for decades alongside Mandela.
Cape Colony: The Cape Colony was a British colony in southern Africa that later became part of the Union of South Africa. Colonial authorities used Robben Island as a place of imprisonment and isolation.
South African liberation movement: The South African liberation movement comprised organizations and campaigns opposing colonial rule and apartheid. Political prisoners on the island became prominent figures in the broader struggle.
Pan Africanist Congress: The Pan Africanist Congress is a South African political organization founded in 1959 after splitting from the ANC. PAC leader Robert Sobukwe’s detention connected the island to a distinct strand of resistance.
Victor Verster Prison: Victor Verster Prison, now called Drakenstein Correctional Centre, is a South African prison where Mandela spent his final prison years. Mandela’s move from the island to this prison preceded his release in 1990.
