Robber baron

A pejorative label for a powerful nineteenth-century American industrialist accused of exploiting workers or manipulating markets. The term contrasts with “captain of industry,” which emphasizes wealth creation and philanthropy.

John D. Rockefeller: An American oil magnate who founded Standard Oil and became one of the wealthiest people in modern history. Standard Oil’s dominance made Rockefeller a defining target of accusations of monopolistic power.
Monopoly: A market structure in which one seller controls nearly all supply and faces little effective competition. Critics used monopoly power to explain how industrialists could set terms for competitors and consumers.
Sherman Antitrust Act: A United States federal law enacted in 1890 to prohibit restraints of trade and monopolization. It was an early federal response to public concern about trusts and concentrated corporate power.
Captain of industry: An honorific for an industrialist whose enterprise is viewed as productive, innovative, or socially beneficial. It recasts many of the same business leaders as builders of industries and sources of prosperity.
Andrew Carnegie: A Scottish-American steel industrialist and philanthropist who built Carnegie Steel into a major producer. His immense fortune and steel operations embodied both industrial growth and labor conflict.
Horizontal integration: The combination of businesses operating at the same stage of production in an industry. Industrial consolidators used it to absorb or eliminate competing firms.
Interstate Commerce Commission: A federal agency established in 1887 to regulate interstate railroad rates and practices. Its creation answered complaints that railroads used discriminatory rates and rebates.
Progressive Era: A period of political and social reform in the United States, roughly from the 1890s to the 1920s. Reformers challenged corporate abuses associated with the industrial order that robber barons symbolized.
Cornelius Vanderbilt: An American businessman who built major shipping and railroad enterprises during the nineteenth century. His railroad consolidation and immense wealth helped establish the era’s image of concentrated private power.
Vertical integration: The ownership of multiple stages of production or distribution within a single business. Controlling supply, manufacture, and transport could lower costs while strengthening market power.
