Robert Ballard

Robert Ballard is an American oceanographer and deep-sea explorer known for locating the wrecks of RMS Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck.

RMS Titanic: A British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic in 1912 after striking an iceberg. Ballard located its wreck in 1985 during a joint expedition with the French research institute IFREMER.
Argo (underwater vehicle): A towed deep-sea imaging system that sends video and sonar data to a surface ship. Ballard used Argo’s real-time images to search the Titanic site.
Jean-Louis Michel: A French oceanographer who co-led the expedition that discovered the Titanic wreck. Michel and Ballard directed the 1985 search through a partnership between American and French teams.
Marine archaeology: The study of human history through submerged sites, including shipwrecks and drowned landscapes. Ballard’s wreck expeditions brought advanced ocean technology into archaeological research.
