Róbert Bárány

Róbert Bárány (1876–1936) was an Austrian physician and physiologist awarded the 1914 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for research on the vestibular apparatus of the ear.

Friedrich Goltz: A German physiologist who studied the role of the semicircular canals in animal balance. Goltz’s theory of vestibular function contrasted with the sensory interpretation Bárány’s experiments supported.
Vestibulo-ocular reflex: A reflex that stabilizes images on the retina by moving the eyes opposite to head motion. Bárány studied the eye movements produced by stimulation of the vestibular system.
