Robert Bunsen

Robert Bunsen (1811–1899) was a German chemist who advanced spectroscopy, co-discovered cesium and rubidium, and developed the burner that bears his name.

Gustav Kirchhoff: A German physicist who formulated Kirchhoff’s laws of spectroscopy and collaborated with Robert Bunsen. Their collaboration established spectral analysis as a method for identifying chemical elements.
Bunsen burner: A laboratory gas burner that produces a controllable flame by mixing gas with air before combustion. Bunsen’s name became attached to this laboratory burner, which enabled cleaner flame tests.
Cesium: A soft, highly reactive alkali metal with atomic number 55, discovered through its blue spectral lines. Bunsen and Kirchhoff identified cesium in mineral water using spectroscopy in 1860.
Analytical chemistry: The branch of chemistry that determines what substances are present and how much of each is present. Bunsen’s innovations expanded its methods beyond traditional chemical reactions and tests.
Friedrich Wöhler: A German chemist known for synthesizing urea from inorganic materials and advancing organic chemistry. Wöhler and Bunsen studied cacodyl compounds, hazardous arsenic-containing substances.
Flame test: A qualitative analytical method that identifies some elements by the colors they impart to a flame. Bunsen used flame colors as an early clue to the spectra of elements.
Rubidium: A highly reactive alkali metal with atomic number 37, discovered through its red spectral lines. Bunsen and Kirchhoff discovered rubidium in 1861 while examining mineral residues.
Chemical element: A pure substance consisting of atoms with the same number of protons. Spectroscopy helped establish a new route to discovering and confirming chemical elements.
Justus von Liebig: A German chemist who transformed chemical education and developed laboratory methods and agricultural chemistry. Bunsen’s work emerged within the German university chemistry system Liebig helped shape.
Spectroscopy: The study of how matter interacts with electromagnetic radiation across wavelengths or frequencies. Bunsen’s work with Kirchhoff helped make spectroscopy a chemical identification method.
