Robert C. Merton

Robert C. Merton is an American economist whose work shaped modern financial economics, especially continuous-time finance and option pricing. He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Financial economics: The study of financial markets, institutions, and decisions using economic theory. This is the field in which Merton developed influential models of markets and investment.
Black–Scholes–Merton model: A model that prices options by relating their value to the underlying asset, time, volatility, and interest rates. Merton helped extend and establish the continuous-time framework behind this landmark option-pricing model.
