Robert Edwards

Robert Edwards (1925–2013) was a British physiologist who developed human in vitro fertilization with gynecologist Patrick Steptoe. Their work led to the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby conceived through IVF, in 1978.

Patrick Steptoe: Patrick Steptoe was a British gynecologist who developed IVF with Robert Edwards. Steptoe brought laparoscopic egg retrieval and clinical expertise to their IVF collaboration.
In vitro fertilization: In vitro fertilization is a fertility treatment in which eggs are fertilized by sperm outside the body, with an embryo later transferred to the uterus. It is the clinical method Edwards and Steptoe pioneered for human reproduction.
Reproductive biology: Reproductive biology studies the biological processes involved in reproduction and the development of reproductive cells and systems. Edwards’s research joined laboratory study of eggs with the clinical problem of infertility.

Jean Purdy: Jean Purdy was an embryologist and nurse who worked with Edwards and Steptoe on IVF. Purdy helped establish and run the Cambridge IVF research program.
Oocyte: An oocyte is an immature female germ cell that can mature into an egg capable of fertilization. Edwards studied how human oocytes mature before they can be fertilized.
In vitro maturation: In vitro maturation is the maturation of immature oocytes in laboratory culture rather than inside the body. Edwards’s experiments showed that human eggs could mature outside the body.
Infertility: Infertility is a disease or condition of the reproductive system defined by difficulty achieving pregnancy after regular unprotected intercourse. IVF offered a new treatment option for people unable to conceive without medical assistance.
Louise Brown: Louise Brown was the first person born after conception through in vitro fertilization. Her 1978 birth demonstrated the clinical result of Edwards and Steptoe’s work.
Embryo culture: Embryo culture is the laboratory maintenance of embryos under controlled conditions during early development. The IVF procedure required embryos to develop in culture before transfer.
