Robert Guiscard

Robert Guiscard was a Norman ruler who conquered much of southern Italy, became duke of Apulia and Calabria, and helped lead the Norman conquest of Sicily.

Battle of Civitate: A 1053 battle in which Norman forces defeated a papal army in southern Italy. Guiscard’s brothers fought in the Norman victory that strengthened their position in Apulia.
Norman conquest of southern Italy: The eleventh-century expansion by Norman forces that established their rule across much of southern Italy. Guiscard’s rise formed a central part of this wider conquest.
Tancred of Hauteville: A Norman lord whose sons established Norman rule in southern Italy and Sicily. Guiscard was one of Tancred’s sons, from a family that supplied much of the Norman leadership.

Papal States: Territories in central Italy governed by the papacy from the eighth century until 1870. Guiscard’s alliance with the papacy brought legitimacy, but his forces also attacked Rome in 1084.
