Robert Hooke

Robert Hooke (1635–1703) was an English scientist, inventor, and architect whose work spanned microscopy, elasticity, mechanics, and the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire.

Isaac Newton: An English mathematician and physicist who formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation. Their dispute over priority in optics and gravitation became a defining episode in Hooke’s reputation.
Hooke's law: The relation stating that elastic deformation is proportional to applied force within a material’s elastic limit. Hooke’s 1678 statement of this relation gave his name to a foundational rule of elasticity.
Cell (biology): The basic structural and functional unit of living organisms. Hooke named cork’s boxlike compartments “cells” after observing them through a microscope.
Westminster School: An English independent school in Westminster, London, with origins in a medieval monastic school. Hooke studied there after leaving the Isle of Wight for London.
Christopher Wren: An English architect, astronomer, and mathematician who helped rebuild London after the Great Fire. Wren and Hooke collaborated on post-fire surveys and building projects across London.
Compound microscope: An optical instrument that magnifies an image through two or more lenses. Hooke used a compound microscope to reveal structures too small to see unaided.
Microscopy: The use of microscopes to observe objects too small to see clearly with the unaided eye. Hooke’s instruments and published observations helped establish microscopy as a scientific practice.
Christ Church, Oxford: A constituent college of the University of Oxford, founded by Henry VIII in 1546. Hooke worked at Oxford, where he encountered experimental philosophy and assisted Boyle.
Royal Society: A scientific society founded in London in 1660 to promote the study of nature through experiment and observation. Hooke served as its curator of experiments and later as secretary, presenting demonstrations and findings.
Air pump: A device that removes air from a vessel to create a partial vacuum. Hooke designed and operated air-pump apparatus for experiments on gases and vacuum.
