Robert Lucas Jr.

Robert Lucas Jr. was an American economist whose rational-expectations research reshaped macroeconomic theory. He received the 1995 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Rational expectations: A theory that economic agents use available information to form expectations consistent with the model of the economy. Lucas made expectations central to macroeconomic models rather than treating them as fixed or backward-looking.
Lucas aggregate-supply function: A model in which output can deviate from its natural level when producers mistake changes in the overall price level for relative-price changes. It formalized how imperfect information could make monetary surprises affect real output.
