Robert Mundell

Robert Mundell (1932–2021) was a Canadian-American economist whose work on monetary dynamics and optimal currency areas shaped international monetary economics. He received the 1999 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Optimal currency area: A region in which sharing a currency can deliver economic benefits without imposing excessive adjustment costs. Mundell’s 1961 analysis made labor mobility a key criterion for judging whether regions should share a currency.
Eurozone: The group of European Union countries that use the euro as their official currency. The eurozone is a prominent test of whether a shared currency fits Mundell’s criteria for an optimal currency area.
Harry G. Johnson: A Canadian economist known for work in international trade and monetary economics. Johnson was a leading contemporary whose international-economics work intersected with Mundell’s.
