Robert Nozick

Robert Nozick (1938–2002) was an American philosopher whose work ranged across political philosophy, epistemology, and decision theory. His book Anarchy, State, and Utopia defended individual rights and a minimal state.

Anarchy, State, and Utopia: Robert Nozick’s 1974 book argues that a minimal state can arise without violating individual rights and criticizes redistributive justice. This book develops the political philosophy most closely associated with Nozick.
State of nature: A hypothetical condition without political authority, used to examine the basis and legitimacy of government. Nozick begins with private protection in a state of nature rather than assuming a state already exists.
John Rawls: An American philosopher whose theory of justice evaluates social institutions through principles chosen behind a veil of ignorance. Rawls’s egalitarian account became the leading contemporary alternative to Nozick’s entitlement theory.
Murray Rothbard: An American economist and political theorist who defended anarcho-capitalism and natural rights. Rothbard’s rejection of the state marks a sharper libertarian position than Nozick’s minimal-state defense.
Wilt Chamberlain argument: A thought experiment in which voluntary payments to a popular basketball player disrupt an initially just distribution. Nozick uses it to argue that preserving patterned equality requires continual interference with voluntary choices.
Self-ownership: The view that people have strong rights over their own bodies, labor, and choices. Nozick uses control over oneself to ground stringent limits on what others may demand.
Protective association: A voluntary organization that provides protection and adjudication services to its members. Competing associations are the starting institutions in Nozick’s account of state formation.
A Theory of Justice: John Rawls’s 1971 book proposing principles of justice for the basic structure of society. Nozick’s book opens by challenging Rawls’s influential theory of distributive justice.
Israel Scheffler: An American philosopher of education and epistemology who taught at Harvard University. Scheffler was Nozick’s colleague in Harvard’s philosophical community.
Patterned theories of justice: Theories that judge distributions by whether they fit a recurring principle, such as equality or need. Nozick’s Wilt Chamberlain example targets theories that require holdings to match a preferred pattern.
