Rock art

Rock art consists of images or markings made on natural rock surfaces by painting, drawing, engraving, or carving. It includes both pictographs and petroglyphs.

Pictograph: An image or mark made on a rock surface by applying pigment. Painted and drawn rock images belong to this broad form.
Chauvet Cave: A cave in southern France containing Paleolithic paintings, engravings, and drawings. Its animal images are among the best-known examples of European cave art.
Archaeology: The study of human history through material remains and their contexts. Archaeologists use rock art alongside artifacts, landscapes, and dating evidence.
