Rock-hewn churches

Rock-hewn churches are Christian places of worship excavated or carved directly into natural rock, creating interiors and often exterior forms from the living stone.

Lalibela: A town in Ethiopia known for a complex of medieval churches carved from volcanic rock. Its churches are the best-known concentrated example of monumental Ethiopian rock-hewn architecture.

Kingdom of Aksum: An ancient kingdom centered in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea, prominent from the first to seventh centuries. Aksumite Christianity shaped the historical setting of Ethiopia’s later monumental churches.
