Rodeo

Rodeo is a competitive sport in which contestants demonstrate skills involving livestock, including riding bucking animals, roping cattle, and timed ranch tasks.

Bull riding: A rodeo event in which a rider attempts to stay mounted on a bucking bull for eight seconds. It is rodeo’s best-known roughstock event, judged on both the ride and the bull.
Rodeo clown: A performer who entertains spectators and helps protect bull riders by drawing a bull’s attention. Clowns can divert bulls after a rider falls, reducing danger in the arena.
Vaquero: A horse-mounted cattle worker in the Spanish and Mexican traditions of the American West. Vaquero horsemanship and cattle-handling practices helped shape rodeo’s skills.
Charro: A Mexican horseman associated with the traditions and practices of charrería. Charro traditions overlap with rodeo’s ranching heritage but belong to a distinct cultural practice.
Bareback bronc riding: A rodeo event in which a rider grips a rigging on a bucking horse with one hand. It tests balance and spurring technique without a saddle.
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association: A United States organization that sanctions professional rodeos and sets rules for many events. Its rulebook and circuit shape much of professional rodeo competition.
Charreada: A Mexican equestrian competition rooted in cattle-ranching traditions, featuring riding and roping events. It shares ranching roots with rodeo while maintaining distinct Mexican forms and rules.
Cutting: A judged Western riding sport in which a horse separates one cow from a herd and keeps it apart. It tests controlled cattle work rather than rodeo’s timed runs and bucking rides.
Saddle bronc riding: A rodeo event in which a rider uses a specialized saddle while riding a bucking horse. Its scored riding style differs from bareback riding in equipment and technique.
Rodeo scoring: The systems used to rank rodeo contestants by time, performance, or both. Roughstock judging and timed-event results reward different kinds of performance.
