Roger Casement

Roger Casement was an Irish diplomat and nationalist whose investigations documented abuses in the Congo Free State and Peru’s Putumayo region. Britain executed him for treason in 1916.

Congo Free State: A personal colony of King Leopold II of Belgium from 1885 to 1908, marked by forced labor and mass violence. Casement’s 1903 consular inquiry documented forced labor and violence under Leopold’s rule.
Irish nationalism: A political movement seeking Irish self-government or independence from British rule. Casement’s opposition to British rule became central to his political life.

Congo Reform Movement: A transnational campaign opposing abuses in the Congo Free State under Leopold II. His Congo report joined a reform campaign that helped shape his public reputation.
