Roger de Flor

Roger de Flor (c. 1267–1305) was a German-born military commander who led the Catalan Company in Byzantine service during the early 14th century. His assassination in 1305 helped trigger the Catalan Vengeance.

Frederick II of Sicily: Frederick II was king of Sicily from 1296 to 1337 and a ruler of the House of Barcelona. He employed Roger de Flor before the commander entered Byzantine service.

Almogavars: Almogavars were light infantry and raiders from the Crown of Aragon, known for mobile warfare. They formed much of the Company's fighting force under Roger's command.
Battle of Apros: The Battle of Apros was a 1305 victory by the Catalan Company over Byzantine forces in Thrace. The Company's victory demonstrated how badly Roger's assassination had damaged Byzantine control.
War of the Sicilian Vespers: The War of the Sicilian Vespers was a conflict beginning in 1282 over control of Sicily between the Angevins and the Crown of Aragon. Roger's military career developed amid the wars that employed Catalan and Aragonese fighters.
Michael IX Palaiologos: Michael IX Palaiologos was Byzantine co-emperor and son of Andronikos II. His conflict with Roger de Flor preceded the commander's assassination.
Byzantine–Ottoman wars: The Byzantine–Ottoman wars were conflicts between the Byzantine Empire and emerging Turkish powers in Anatolia and the Balkans. Byzantine losses against Turkish forces prompted the employment of Roger's company.
