Roger Joseph Boscovich

Roger Joseph Boscovich (1711–1787) was a Jesuit scientist and philosopher from Dubrovnik whose work ranged across astronomy, mathematics, physics, and natural philosophy. He proposed a theory of matter built from dimensionless points interacting through forces.

Boscovich's atomic theory: A theory that matter consists of indivisible, dimensionless points interacting through forces that vary with distance. This is the central physical framework behind Boscovich’s account of matter.
Boscovich curve: A curve representing Boscovich’s proposed variation of force between material points with their separation. The curve gives mathematical form to his changing repulsion and attraction.
Dubrovnik: A historic Adriatic port city in present-day Croatia, formerly the center of the Republic of Ragusa. Boscovich was born in Dubrovnik, then the Republic of Ragusa.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz: A German philosopher and mathematician who developed calculus independently and proposed a metaphysics of monads. Leibniz’s rejection of simple extended atoms parallels a central question in Boscovich’s theory.
