Roger Myerson

Roger Myerson is an American economist whose work advanced game theory and mechanism design. He shared the 2007 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for contributions to mechanism design theory.

Game theory: The mathematical study of strategic interaction among decision-makers. Myerson used strategic models to analyze incentives, bargaining, and institutions.
Mechanism design: The design of rules that produce desired outcomes when participants act in their own interests. This is the field whose theory earned Myerson the 2007 Nobel Prize.
Myerson auction: An optimal auction for a seller facing bidders with private values drawn from known distributions. It applies Myerson’s revenue-maximization theory to a seller’s allocation and pricing problem.

Auction theory: The analysis of auction rules, bidder behavior, and the allocation of goods through bidding. His optimal-auction results became a central part of modern auction theory.
