Roger of Lauria

Roger of Lauria was a 13th-century admiral who commanded the fleets of the Crown of Aragon and became a leading naval commander in the War of the Sicilian Vespers.

Battle of Malta (1283): A 1283 naval battle in which Roger of Lauria defeated an Angevin fleet near Malta. This victory established Lauria’s command of the central Mediterranean approaches.
War galley: A long, oar-powered warship designed for maneuver and combat, often supported by sails. Galleys formed the principal fighting vessels in Lauria’s Mediterranean campaigns.
War of the Sicilian Vespers: A 1282–1302 conflict over Sicily involving the Crown of Aragon, the Angevins, and their allies. Lauria became the leading Aragonese naval commander in this struggle.

Kingdom of Sicily: A medieval kingdom encompassing Sicily and, at different times, territories in southern Italy. Lauria’s campaigns helped determine who controlled Sicily after the 1282 revolt.
