Rohingya people

The Rohingya are a predominantly Muslim, Indo-Aryan-speaking ethnic group indigenous to Rakhine State in Myanmar. Their history is shaped by contested citizenship, communal violence, and mass displacement.

Rakhine State: A coastal state in western Myanmar, bordering Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. It is the Rohingya homeland and the setting of much of their modern history.
1982 Burmese Citizenship Law: Myanmar’s citizenship law establishing tiers of citizenship and criteria tied to recognized national ethnic groups. Its framework has been used to deny most Rohingya full citizenship.
Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army: An armed Rohingya group that launched attacks on Myanmar security forces in Rakhine State in 2016 and 2017. Its attacks preceded military operations that triggered mass flight in 2017.
Bengali (Myanmar political usage): A label used by many Myanmar officials and nationalists for Rohingya, implying migration from Bengal rather than indigenous belonging. Many Rohingya reject it as a denial of their identity and historical ties to Rakhine.
Arakan Kingdom: A kingdom centered in present-day Rakhine State that flourished from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century. Its history is invoked in debates about Muslim communities’ longstanding presence in the region.
Operation Dragon King: A 1978 Burmese military operation in northern Rakhine that drove large numbers of Rohingya into Bangladesh. It was an early major episode of forced displacement from the region.
Mohib Ullah: A Rohingya community leader and refugee advocate who was killed in Bangladesh in 2021. He organized refugee advocacy and opposed armed-group influence in the camps.
Rohingya identity debate: A political and historical dispute over Rohingya identity, origins, and recognition as an ethnic group in Myanmar. The dispute shapes official terminology, citizenship claims, and accounts of regional history.
British Burma: The colonial territory administered by Britain in the area of present-day Myanmar from the nineteenth century until 1948. Colonial-era migration and administration shaped later disputes over community origins and belonging.
2012 Rakhine State riots: Communal violence in Rakhine State in 2012 that killed people and displaced tens of thousands, mostly Rohingya. The violence confined many Rohingya to camps and intensified segregation.
