Rojava

Rojava is a self-governing political project in northern Syria associated with Kurdish-led institutions, democratic confederalism, and local councils. Its formal administration has been known as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.

Democratic confederalism: A political theory advocating decentralized, participatory self-government through local assemblies and confederated institutions. It supplies the political framework most closely associated with Rojava’s institutions.
Kurdish nationalism: A political movement advocating recognition, rights, or self-determination for Kurdish people. Rojava’s emergence draws on Kurdish political mobilization while pursuing a distinct decentralized program.
Salih Muslim: A Syrian Kurdish politician who served as a leading figure in the Democratic Union Party. He represented the party central to Rojava’s early political organization.
Syrian government: The state authorities led by Bashar al-Assad during the Syrian civil war. The administration’s de facto autonomy has existed alongside Damascus’s claim to national sovereignty.
Jineology: A body of thought developed in the Kurdish movement that centers women’s knowledge and liberation. It expresses the project’s distinctive approach to gender and social analysis.
Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria: The governing administration established in northeastern Syria during the Syrian civil war. This is the formal administrative structure through which much of Rojava’s self-government operates.
Kurdistan Workers’ Party: A Kurdish political and armed organization founded in Turkey in 1978. Its ideological evolution strongly influenced the movement behind Rojava.
Asya Abdullah: A Syrian Kurdish politician who co-led the Democratic Union Party. Her leadership reflected women’s participation in the project’s political institutions.
ISIS: A jihadist armed organization that controlled territory in Syria and Iraq from 2014. Its expansion brought Rojava into a defining military conflict and sharply different political project.
Kurdish–Turkish conflict: The long-running conflict involving the Turkish state and Kurdish movements, including the PKK. Turkey’s view of Kurdish-led autonomy links Rojava to this broader regional conflict.
