Roland Barthes

Roland Barthes (1915–1980) was a French literary theorist and critic whose writing reshaped semiotics and structuralism and examined literature, photography, and popular culture.

Semiotics: The study of signs and how they produce meaning. Barthes treated cultural objects as sign systems whose meanings could be analyzed.
Denotation and connotation: Denotation is a sign’s direct meaning; connotation is the additional meaning it carries through association. Barthes uses the distinction to explain how cultural messages attach values to apparently neutral signs.
