Role model

A role model is a person whose behavior, achievements, or qualities others admire and may imitate. Role models can shape beliefs, ambitions, and conduct through example.

Social learning theory: A theory that explains how people learn behaviors by observing others and their consequences. It explains how admired people can teach behavior without directly instructing or rewarding anyone.
Mentorship: A developmental relationship in which a more experienced person supports another person's learning and growth. Mentors can become role models while also offering guidance beyond example.
Idolization: Excessive admiration that treats a person as exceptionally worthy or nearly perfect. Role models may be respected without being placed beyond ordinary criticism.
Stereotype threat: A situational pressure that can impair performance when people fear confirming a negative stereotype about their group. A lack of relatable exemplars can make stereotypes feel more salient in achievement settings.
Virtue ethics: An ethical approach that centers moral character and the cultivation of virtues. Its emphasis on exemplary character helps explain why people look to admirable lives.
Observational learning: Learning that occurs by watching another person perform an action and observing its consequences. Imitating a role model is a prominent form of learning by observation.
Career development: The process of exploring, choosing, and progressing through work over a person's life. People often use professionals they admire to imagine and plan possible careers.
Antihero: A central character who lacks conventional heroic virtues or behaves in morally ambiguous ways. An antihero can attract attention without serving as a straightforward behavioral ideal.
Possible selves: A person's ideas about what they might become, hope to become, or fear becoming. Role models help make particular future identities seem imaginable.
Moral exemplar: A person whose conduct offers a compelling example of moral virtue. Moral exemplars are role models specifically admired for ethical character.
