Roman army

The military forces that defended and expanded Roman territory under the Roman Republic and Empire. Its organization, recruitment, and tactics changed substantially over centuries.

Roman legion: A major Roman military unit, especially the organized infantry formation central to Rome’s armies. The legion was the army’s core formation, though its size and structure changed over time.
Roman Kingdom: The period of Roman history traditionally dated from the city’s founding to the establishment of the Republic. Rome’s earliest military organization developed under its kings.
Gaius Marius: A Roman general and statesman whose military career reshaped recruitment and influenced the late Republic. His reforms are associated with a major change in how soldiers entered and served in the army.
