Roman baths

Roman baths were public bathing complexes in the Roman world, commonly combining heated rooms, pools at different temperatures, exercise spaces, and social areas.

Hypocaust: A Roman underfloor heating system that circulated hot air beneath floors and through wall spaces. It supplied heat to the hot rooms and pools central to many baths.
Baths of Caracalla: A vast public bath complex in Rome, built in the early third century CE. Its surviving remains show the scale and spatial organization of imperial baths.
Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa: A Roman statesman and general who served Augustus and sponsored major public works in Rome. He built one of Rome’s earliest major public bath complexes.
Palaestra: An exercise area in ancient Greek and Roman settings, often attached to a bath complex. Bath users could exercise there before bathing.
Roman social life: The customs, relationships, and shared activities that shaped everyday life in ancient Rome. Bathing brought people of different backgrounds into recurring public social settings.
Tepidarium: A warm room in a Roman bath, often used between cooler and hotter bathing spaces. It served as a transitional room in the bathing sequence.
Baths of Diocletian: A monumental public bath complex in Rome, built in the late third and early fourth centuries CE. It was among Rome’s largest bath complexes and later housed other civic uses.
Caracalla: A Roman emperor who ruled from 198 to 217 CE, first jointly and then alone. The monumental baths named for him expressed imperial generosity and power.
Apodyterium: A changing room in an ancient Greek or Roman bathing facility. It provided a place to undress and store clothing before bathing.
Roman public architecture: The design and construction of buildings intended for civic, religious, or administrative use in ancient Rome. Baths were among the most technically ambitious and visible public buildings.
