Roman circus

A large Roman venue designed primarily for chariot races and other public spectacles. Its elongated track, central barrier, and turning posts shaped racing and spectatorship.

Spina: A long central barrier dividing the lanes of a Roman circus track, often decorated with monuments and water features. It split the racing course and gave charioteers a landmark to circle.
Chariot racing: A competitive sport in which drivers race horse-drawn chariots around a course. It was the circus’s principal attraction and dictated the venue’s long, oval plan.
Circus Maximus: The largest and most famous chariot-racing venue in ancient Rome, located between the Palatine and Aventine hills. Its immense scale became the defining example of the Roman circus.
Factions of the Roman circus: Organized teams in Roman chariot racing, identified chiefly by colors such as red, white, blue, and green. Faction loyalties organized competitors and gave spectators durable social affiliations.
Metae: Conical turning posts placed at each end of a Roman circus’s central barrier. Racers rounded these hazardous markers on every lap.
Ludi circenses: Public games in ancient Rome that included chariot races and other circus spectacles. Circus races formed a major part of Rome’s public games.
Circus of Maxentius: A well-preserved circus built near Rome along the Appian Way during the reign of Maxentius. Its remains preserve the layout and structures of a late Roman circus.
Roman games: Public festivals and spectacles sponsored by Roman communities and officials. Circus events belonged to a wider system of civic entertainment and patronage.
Carceres: Starting gates at one end of a Roman circus track, where chariots waited before a race. Their staggered arrangement helped give competing teams an equal start.
Roman triumph: A formal Roman procession honoring a victorious military commander. Circuses could host triumphal celebrations and display captured wealth to crowds.
