Roman concrete

Roman concrete was a building material made by combining lime-based mortar with aggregate such as stone, rubble, and volcanic ash. Its varied recipes produced structures ranging from foundations to domes.

Pozzolana: Natural volcanic ash or other silica-rich material that reacts with lime in water to form hydraulic cementitious compounds. This volcanic material helped Roman mortars harden in damp conditions and resist water.
Pozzolanic reaction: A reaction in which reactive silica or alumina combines with calcium hydroxide and water to form cementing compounds. This reaction let volcanic ash strengthen Roman lime mortar without relying solely on air exposure.
Roman architecture: The architectural traditions and building practices of ancient Rome and its territories. Concrete became a defining material within Rome’s wider architectural repertoire.
Vitruvius: A Roman architect and author of De architectura, a surviving treatise on building and engineering. His text describes lime, aggregate, and volcanic materials used in Roman construction.
Roman marine concrete: Roman concrete used in harbor and coastal structures, where lime, volcanic ash, seawater, and rubble interacted. Marine samples preserve distinctive minerals that researchers use to investigate long-term durability.
Lime mortar: A mortar made by mixing lime binder with sand or other aggregate and water. Lime-based mortar supplied the binder that held Roman concrete’s aggregate together.
Calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate: A family of poorly crystalline binding phases formed in hydrated cement and some lime-pozzolana mixtures. These binding phases contributed to the cohesion of many Roman concrete mixtures.
Pantheon: A Roman temple in Rome, completed in its present form under Hadrian, with a large unreinforced concrete dome. Its dome shows how carefully varied concrete mixes could reduce weight toward the top.
De architectura: A ten-book Latin treatise on architecture and engineering written by Vitruvius in the first century BCE. It preserves early written accounts of Roman mortar ingredients and building methods.
Al-tobermorite: A rare aluminum-bearing calcium silicate hydrate mineral found in some ancient marine concrete. Its growth in certain Roman harbor structures is linked to seawater exposure and evolving mineral reactions.
