Roman imperialism

Roman imperialism was the expansion and governance of Roman power across Italy and the Mediterranean, through conquest, alliances, settlement, and provincial rule.

Roman legion: The principal military unit of the Roman army, organized around cohorts and centuries. Legions supplied the force behind conquest and enforced Roman control across distant territories.
Roman conquest of Italy: The centuries-long process by which Rome brought the Italian peninsula under its leadership. Italian conquest created the military alliances and territorial base for overseas expansion.
Scipio Africanus: A Roman general who defeated Hannibal at Zama in 202 BCE and helped end the Second Punic War. His victory shifted Roman expansion toward the western Mediterranean and North Africa.
Social War: The conflict of 91–88 BCE between Rome and its Italian allies, who sought Roman citizenship. It ended with citizenship extended broadly across Italy, transforming the status of Rome's allied communities.
Athenian Empire: The maritime alliance led by Athens in the fifth century BCE, which developed into an empire over its allies. Its tribute-based league offers an earlier Greek comparison for Rome's control of subordinate communities.

Roman slavery: A system in which Roman law treated enslaved people as property, with status shaped by birth, capture, and manumission. Conquest supplied many enslaved people and expanded the economic and social role of slavery.
Macedonian Empire: The empire created by Alexander the Great through conquest across the eastern Mediterranean and Asia. Alexander's rapid conquests contrast with Rome's prolonged incorporation of territories and peoples.
