Roman legion

A large unit of the Roman army, composed chiefly of heavy infantry and organized into smaller tactical subdivisions. Its size and structure changed across Roman history.

Contubernium: A Roman army tent group, usually consisting of eight soldiers who shared equipment and quarters. It was the smallest customary living and administrative group within the imperial legion.
Maniple: A Roman infantry subdivision used chiefly during the middle Republic, composed of two centuries. Its flexible arrangement shaped the legion’s battlefield organization before the cohort system prevailed.
Roman Republic: The period of Roman government traditionally dated from 509 to 27 BCE, before the establishment of the emperors. Republican institutions shaped the levies and commands from which early legionary organization developed.
Roman conquest of Gaul: The campaigns by which Julius Caesar brought much of Gaul under Roman control from 58 to 50 BCE. Caesar’s campaigns show legions operating in prolonged conquest across varied terrain.
Roman road: A road built or maintained by Roman authorities, often engineered for durable military and civilian travel. Road networks let legions move rapidly and helped connect garrisons to supply centers.
Century (Roman army unit): A Roman army unit commanded by a centurion, usually comprising about eighty soldiers in the imperial period. Centuries formed the legion’s principal tactical subdivisions.
Pilum: A Roman heavy javelin designed to be thrown before close combat. Legionaries used it to disrupt opponents as the formation closed to fight.
Servian military reforms: Traditionally attributed reforms that organized Roman citizens for military service according to property and equipment. They offer an early account of how civic status and military obligation became linked.
Siege of Alesia: The 52 BCE Roman siege in which Julius Caesar’s forces encircled the Gallic stronghold of Alesia. Legionaries built extensive siegeworks to contain both the besieged force and its relief army.
Romanization: The adoption and adaptation of Roman political, social, and cultural practices in territories under Roman influence. Long-term military presence helped spread Roman institutions and customs in provincial communities.
