Roman–Parthian relations

Roman–Parthian relations were the political and military interactions between Rome and the Parthian Empire from the first century BCE to the third century CE, shaped chiefly by rivalry over Armenia and Mesopotamia.

Battle of Carrhae: A 53 BCE battle in which Parthian forces under Surena defeated a Roman army led by Marcus Licinius Crassus. The defeat exposed Roman vulnerability to Parthian cavalry and redirected Roman ambitions eastward.
Kingdom of Armenia (antiquity): An ancient kingdom in the Armenian Highlands, situated between Roman and Iranian powers. Its kingship repeatedly became the central prize and bargaining point between Rome and Parthia.
Marcus Licinius Crassus: A Roman politician and general whose eastern campaign ended in defeat at Carrhae in 53 BCE. His failed invasion became Rome's defining early military disaster against Parthia.

Trajan's Parthian campaign: A Roman invasion of the Parthian Empire in 114–117 CE that briefly captured its capital, Ctesiphon. Trajan's short-lived conquests show the limits of turning battlefield success into durable control.
Ctesiphon: An ancient city on the Tigris that served as a major Parthian and later Sasanian capital. Roman expeditions repeatedly targeted this political center, though occupation proved difficult to sustain.
