Roman Question

The Roman Question was the dispute over Rome’s status and the relationship between the Italian state and the papacy after Italian unification, lasting until the Lateran Treaty of 1929.

Capture of Rome: The Italian army’s entry into Rome on 20 September 1870, ending papal temporal rule over the city. It transferred Rome to the Kingdom of Italy and triggered the Roman Question.
Law of Guarantees: An Italian statute of 1871 that specified the pope’s privileges and the Holy See’s relationship with the Italian state. Italy offered it as a unilateral settlement after annexing Rome; the pope rejected it.
