Roman Republic

The Roman Republic was Rome’s political system from the traditional overthrow of its monarchy in 509 BCE to Augustus’s establishment of the Empire in 27 BCE. It combined elected magistracies, senatorial authority, and popular assemblies, while expanding Rome across the Mediterranean.

Roman Senate: Rome’s governing council, whose authority and membership changed across the Republic and Empire. Its advice, finances, and diplomacy gave senators influence beyond their formal powers.
Roman Kingdom: The traditional early period of Roman history governed by kings, ending with the Republic’s founding. Roman accounts traced the Republic’s institutions to the expulsion of the last king.
Cincinnatus: A Roman aristocrat remembered for accepting emergency authority and then relinquishing it after victory. His legend embodied the ideal that republican office was temporary service, not personal rule.
Punic Wars: A series of wars between Rome and Carthage from 264 to 146 BCE. Victory made Rome the dominant power in the western Mediterranean and brought new pressures.
Roman magistrate: An elected Roman official who exercised public duties and, in senior offices, executive authority. Annual magistracies supplied the Republic’s executive leadership and military commanders.
Lucius Tarquinius Superbus: The last king of Rome in Roman tradition, whose rule ended with the monarchy’s overthrow. His alleged tyranny became the Republic’s founding warning against kingship.
Scipio Africanus: The Roman general who defeated Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE. His victory secured Rome’s dominance after the Second Punic War.
Roman provinces: Territories outside Italy administered by Rome through appointed governors and other officials. Conquest created provinces whose revenues and commands became prizes in Roman politics.
Roman consul: One of two annually elected chief magistrates who led Rome’s government and armies. Collegial rule and short terms were designed to prevent one consul from monopolizing power.
Conflict of the Orders: A prolonged political struggle between patricians and plebeians over rights and public office. Its settlements reshaped access to office and protections for ordinary citizens.
