Roman siege warfare

Roman siege warfare comprised the methods and technologies Roman armies used to capture fortified places and the measures defenders used against them.

Circumvallation: A fortified line built around a besieged place to prevent escape or outside aid. Roman armies used encircling defenses to isolate targets and protect siege operations.
Siege of Alesia: Julius Caesar’s siege of the Gallic stronghold of Alesia in 52 BCE. Its paired lines of fortification resisted both the besieged Gauls and a relieving army.
Roman military engineering: The design and construction work Roman forces undertook for camps, roads, bridges, and fortifications. Sieges drew on the same organized engineering skills used throughout Roman campaigns.
Greek siege warfare: The methods and machines Greek armies used to attack and defend fortified places. Roman siegecraft adopted and adapted techniques developed in the Hellenistic world.
Roman conquest of Gaul: The campaigns from 58 to 50 BCE through which Rome brought much of Gaul under its control. The conquest depended on repeated sieges, most famously Caesar’s operations at Alesia.
Roman siege tower: A mobile, multi-storey structure used to bring attackers and weapons level with a fortification’s walls. Towers let Roman troops approach walls under cover and attempt to cross them.
Siege of Masada: The Roman siege of a Jewish stronghold atop a desert plateau, ending around 73 or 74 CE. The surviving ramp illustrates how Roman engineers overcame steep terrain.
Roman legion: The principal heavy infantry unit of the Roman army, organized into cohorts and centuries. Legionaries supplied the labor and fighting force for siege lines and assaults.
Hellenistic siege engines: Large machines developed in Hellenistic states for attacking fortifications, including towers and artillery. These elaborate engines formed a major technical inheritance for Roman siege operations.
Roman siege of Jerusalem: The Roman capture and destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE during the First Jewish–Roman War. The siege left lasting political and religious consequences and became a prominent Roman victory narrative.
