Roman Syria

Roman Syria was a province established after Pompey annexed the Seleucid kingdom in 64 BCE. It became a major eastern frontier and administrative center of the Roman Empire.

Pompey: Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus was a Roman general and statesman who expanded Roman power in the eastern Mediterranean. His campaign ended Seleucid rule and established Roman authority in Syria.
Roman governor: A Roman official appointed to govern a province, administer justice, and oversee its public affairs. Governors exercised Rome’s authority over Syrian cities and provincial territory.
Antioch: An ancient city on the Orontes River, founded by Seleucus I and later a major Roman metropolis. As Syria’s principal city, it anchored provincial administration and regional trade.
Roman–Persian Wars: A prolonged series of conflicts between the Roman Empire and successive Iranian empires over Near Eastern territories. Syria’s frontier position made it central to wars that continued after Parthia’s fall.
Seleucid Empire: A Hellenistic kingdom founded by Seleucus I that ruled much of western Asia after Alexander the Great’s death. Its final kingdom was the territory Pompey annexed to form the province.
Legatus Augusti pro praetore: A senatorial governor appointed by the emperor to command an imperial province and its legions. This office governed imperial Syria after the province’s reorganization under Augustus.
Palmyra: An oasis city in the Syrian Desert that became a wealthy trading center between Rome and Parthia. Its strategic position linked the province to desert routes and eastern commerce.
Christianity in Syria: The development of Christian communities and institutions across ancient and medieval Syria. Roman-era cities such as Antioch became early centers of Christian life.
Third Mithridatic War: A war from 73 to 63 BCE in which Rome defeated Mithridates VI of Pontus and reorganized much of the eastern Mediterranean. Its conclusion gave Pompey the power to settle Syria and neighboring kingdoms.
Roman legion: A large Roman military unit, typically composed of several thousand citizen soldiers. Legions stationed in Syria defended the frontier and supported provincial authority.
