Rome Metro

Rome’s rapid-transit railway serves the city and its suburbs through underground and surface lines. Its network is shaped by archaeological discoveries and the difficulty of tunneling beneath the historic center.

Line A (Rome Metro): A Rome Metro line running between Battistini and Anagnina through central Rome. Its east–west route links central districts with residential areas on both sides.
Rome Metro line B: Rome’s first Metro line, opened in 1955 between Termini and Laurentina. Its opening established the city’s modern underground railway service.
Rome public transport: The network of public buses, trams, railways, and Metro services operating in Rome. The Metro forms the high-capacity backbone of the city’s transit system.
Metro C Archaeological Museum: A planned museum project associated with archaeological discoveries during Rome Metro line C construction. The project links subway works with preservation and public display of excavated finds.
Line B (Rome Metro): A Rome Metro line connecting Rebibbia and Jonio with Laurentina, including a branch to Jonio. It provides the network’s north–south spine and serves the EUR district.
Rome Metro line A: A Rome Metro line opened in 1980, later extended to Battistini and Anagnina. Its arrival created a second major corridor after decades of planning.
Roma Termini railway station: Rome’s central railway station, serving national and international trains as well as local transport. Metro connections make the station accessible from several urban districts.
San Giovanni station (Rome Metro): A Rome Metro interchange station displaying archaeological layers uncovered during construction. Its exhibition makes the history beneath the city visible inside a working station.
Line C (Rome Metro): A driverless Rome Metro line running between Monte Compatri-Pantano and Colosseo. Its construction crosses archaeologically dense areas and extends service eastward.
Rome Metro line C: Rome’s third Metro line, whose first section opened in 2014. Its protracted construction illustrates the impact of archaeology on expansion.
