Ronald Syme

Ronald Syme (1903–1989) was a New Zealand-born British historian of ancient Rome, best known for The Roman Revolution (1939) and his study of Roman elites.

Roman Republic: The ancient Roman state governed by elected magistrates and aristocratic institutions before the establishment of imperial rule. Syme traced how republican institutions and political competition gave way to Augustus’s one-man rule.
The Roman Revolution: Ronald Syme’s 1939 study of the fall of the Roman Republic and the creation of Augustus’s regime. This is Syme’s best-known work and the clearest statement of his interpretation of Augustus.
Theodor Mommsen: A German classical scholar and historian whose History of Rome shaped modern study of Roman history and law. Mommsen’s constitutional framework contrasts with Syme’s emphasis on political actors and power networks.
Augustus: The first Roman emperor, who ruled from 27 BCE to 14 CE and established the Principate. Syme recast Augustus as a victorious political operator rather than simply a restorer of republican order.

Sir Ronald Storrs: A British diplomat and writer whose accounts of Roman history included a more favorable view of Augustus than Syme’s. Storrs’s presentation of Augustus offers a striking alternative to Syme’s account of concealed autocracy.
Augustan settlement: The political arrangements through which Augustus secured lasting dominance while retaining republican offices and language. Syme’s interpretation treats the settlement as the outcome of civil war and political consolidation.
University of Otago: A public research university in Dunedin, New Zealand, founded in 1869. Syme studied there before moving to Oxford for further education.
