Knowra Rondônia Rondônia Rondônia is a state in western Brazil, on the southern edge of the Amazon Basin and bordering Bolivia. Its capital is Porto Velho, and it is named after explorer Cândido Rondon.
Amazon Basin : The drainage basin of the Amazon River, spanning much of northern South America. Rondônia lies on the basin’s southern edge, where rivers flow north toward the Amazon.
Madeira-Mamoré Railway : A railway built in the early twentieth century through the Amazon region of Brazil and Bolivia. Its construction helped establish Porto Velho and brought workers and commerce into the region.
Cattle ranching in the Amazon : The raising of cattle on pasture created by clearing or converting land in the Amazon region. Cattle production is a major economic activity and a leading source of forest conversion in Rondônia.
Ji-Paraná : A city in central Rondônia and one of the state’s largest urban centers. Its growth along BR-364 illustrates the settlement pattern spreading through the state.

Guaporé River : A river forming part of the border between Brazil and Bolivia before joining the Mamoré River. Its valley marks a historic frontier in the territory that became Rondônia.
Deforestation in Brazil : The removal of native forests in Brazil, especially in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. Rondônia has experienced extensive forest loss associated with roads, farming, and settlement.
Guajará-Mirim : A municipality in western Rondônia on the Mamoré River, across from Bolivia. Its river-border setting preserves a distinct strand of the state’s frontier history.
Forest fragmentation : The division of continuous forest into smaller, isolated patches by roads, clearing, or other disturbance. Roads and agricultural clearing have broken Rondônia’s forests into increasingly isolated areas.
