Roosevelt Corollary

A 1904 addition to the Monroe Doctrine asserting a U.S. right to intervene in Latin American countries to prevent European intervention.

Monroe Doctrine: A 1823 U.S. policy opposing new European colonization and political intervention in the Americas. Roosevelt presented his corollary as an extension of this earlier policy.
Banana Wars: A series of U.S. military interventions in the Caribbean and Central America from the late 19th century through the 1930s. These interventions often reflected the regional policing role the corollary claimed.
Preventive intervention: The use of force before an anticipated threat fully materializes. Roosevelt justified intervention as a way to prevent European powers from acting first.
