Ross Dependency

The Ross Dependency is a sector of Antarctica claimed by New Zealand, extending from the South Pole to the Southern Ocean and centered on the Ross Sea.

James Clark Ross: A British naval officer and polar explorer who led Antarctic expeditions in the 1840s. His voyages charted the Ross Sea region that later became the dependency’s geographic center.
Antarctica: Earth’s southernmost continent, almost entirely covered by ice. The dependency is one defined sector of this continent.
Scott Base: New Zealand’s Antarctic research station on Ross Island, established in 1957. It is New Zealand’s principal permanent base inside the dependency.
Adélie Land: A sector of East Antarctica claimed by France, between the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Ross Dependency. Its French claim borders the Ross Dependency’s western edge.
Ross Sea: A deep Southern Ocean embayment bordered by Antarctica and the Ross Ice Shelf. The sea gives the dependency its name and anchors its eastern geography.
Antarctic Treaty System: The international agreements governing Antarctic activity, cooperation, and territorial claims. Its rules preserve the status quo around competing claims, including New Zealand’s.
McMurdo Station: The United States’ largest Antarctic research station, on Ross Island. Its nearby operations make the Ross region a major hub for Antarctic logistics.
Australian Antarctic Territory: A large East Antarctic sector claimed by Australia, adjoining the Ross Dependency. It is the neighboring claim immediately west of the dependency.
British Antarctic Expedition: A British Antarctic expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott from 1901 to 1904. Its exploration strengthened the British presence in the region before formal claims.
Antarctic territorial claims: National claims to sectors of Antarctica, several of which overlap or remain unrecognized. The Ross Dependency is one of seven formal national claims on the continent.
