Pistonless rotary engine

An internal-combustion engine that produces rotary output without reciprocating pistons, using rotating components to form and change combustion chambers.

Wankel engine: A rotary internal-combustion engine in which a triangular rotor turns within an epitrochoidal housing. Its rotor directly forms moving combustion chambers and is the best-known pistonless engine design.
Rotor: A rotating component that transfers motion or force within a machine. Rotors replace the reciprocating pistons in the defining architecture of these engines.
Mazda RX-7: A Mazda sports car produced from 1978 to 2002, known for its Wankel rotary engine. It became one of the most recognizable production applications of rotary power.
Gas turbine: A rotary engine that compresses air, burns fuel continuously, and extracts power from expanding gas. It produces rotary power through continuous flow rather than chambers carried by a rotor.
Brake-specific fuel consumption: A measure of fuel consumed per unit of useful engine power produced over time. It makes the fuel-efficiency trade-offs of rotary designs comparable with other engines.
Combustion chamber: A space in an engine where a fuel–air mixture burns and releases energy. The engine's rotating parts repeatedly create, enlarge, and shrink these chambers.
Eccentric shaft: A shaft whose offset journals convert a Wankel rotor's motion into output rotation. Its geometry translates the rotor's orbital motion into usable shaft torque.
Mazda 787B: A Mazda Group C racing car that won the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans. Its four-rotor engine demonstrated rotary power in endurance racing.
Quasiturbine: A proposed rotary engine using a four-sided articulated rotor in an oval chamber. It is an alternative chamber-forming architecture, though it has not achieved broad commercial use.
Engine emissions: Pollutants released by an engine during fuel combustion and exhaust. Combustion-chamber shape and oil use can complicate emissions control in rotary engines.
