Rotor

A rotor is the rotating assembly of an electric motor, mounted on a shaft and acted on by electromagnetic forces. Its interaction with the stationary stator produces torque.

Stator: The stationary part of an electric motor that creates or channels a magnetic field. Its magnetic field interacts with the rotor to produce torque.
Electric motor: A machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical motion. The rotor is the moving assembly within this broader machine.
Induction motor: An alternating-current motor in which stator currents induce current in the rotor. Its rotor differs from designs whose field comes from permanent magnets or direct current.
Electric generator: A machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction. A generator’s rotor supplies the moving magnetic field or conductors needed for induction.
Electromagnetic induction: The production of voltage or current in a conductor by a changing magnetic field. Induction creates rotor currents in many alternating-current motors.
Shaft: A rotating mechanical element that transmits torque and supports attached components. The rotor is mounted on the shaft and delivers motion through it.
Synchronous motor: An alternating-current motor whose rotor runs in step with the rotating stator field. Its steady operating speed contrasts with the induction motor’s slip-dependent speed.
Traction motor: An electric motor designed to propel a vehicle or other transport system. Its rotor must provide useful torque across changing speeds and loads.
Torque: A measure of the turning effect produced by a force around an axis. Electromagnetic forces on the rotor generate the motor’s turning output.
Magnetic field: A physical field produced by magnets, electric currents, or changing electric fields that exerts magnetic forces. Magnetic fields exert the forces that turn the rotor.
