Round-robin tournament

A competition format in which each participant plays every other participant, or every participant in a defined group. Results are usually combined in a standings table to rank competitors.

Single round-robin tournament: A round-robin format in which each pair of participants meets once. It is the simplest form: every pair contributes exactly one match.
Single-elimination tournament: A tournament format in which a competitor is eliminated after one loss. Unlike round-robin play, it reduces the field through successive knockout matches.
League system: A competition system in which participants accumulate results across repeated fixtures to determine a ranking. Round-robin schedules are a common way for a league’s members to face one another.
Home advantage: The performance benefit competitors may gain when playing at a familiar or home venue. A one-meeting pairing may give only one competitor the home setting.
All-play-all tournament: A tournament format in which every participant competes against every other participant. This common name emphasizes the complete pairing structure of a round robin.
Double round-robin tournament: A round-robin format in which each pair of participants meets twice. A second meeting, often at the other participant’s venue, changes the schedule and match count.
Double-elimination tournament: A tournament format in which competitors are eliminated after two losses. It offers a second chance but does not require every pair to meet.
Group stage: A phase of a competition in which participants compete within groups before later rounds. Many group stages use round-robin matches to decide which teams advance.
Competitive balance: The degree to which competitors in a league or tournament have comparable chances of success. A complete schedule exposes differences across the field, though match conditions can still vary.
Chess tournament: A competition in which chess players play games under an organized format and ranking system. Round robins are especially practical in chess fields small enough for every pairing.
