Route from the Varangians to the Greeks

A medieval river-and-portage network linking Scandinavia and the Baltic to Constantinople through the lands of the Eastern Slavs. It connected northern trade and settlement with the Byzantine world.

Varangians: Scandinavian people active in trade, raiding, and political service across eastern Europe and the Byzantine world. Their movement and commerce gave the route its northern name.
Constantinople: The capital of the Byzantine Empire, situated on the Bosporus between Europe and Asia. It was the route’s principal southern destination and a major market.
Trade in Kievan Rus': The exchange of goods within and beyond the medieval polity centered on Kyiv. Long-distance traffic through the river corridor supported Rus’ trade with northern and southern markets.
Volkhov River: A river connecting Lake Ilmen with Lake Ladoga in northwestern Russia. It linked Novgorod’s hinterland to the northern waterways leading toward the Baltic.
Viking Age: The period of Scandinavian overseas expansion, conventionally dated from the late eighth to the eleventh century. The route developed within the wider networks of Viking-era migration and trade.
Byzantine Empire: The eastern Roman Empire, centered on Constantinople and lasting until 1453. Its wealth and political influence drew merchants and envoys along the route.
Slavery in Kievan Rus': The enslavement and sale of people in the medieval Rus’ lands, including through regional and long-distance trade. Human captives were among the commodities carried through eastern European trade networks.
Lake Ilmen: A large lake in northwestern Russia, drained by the Volkhov River. It formed a key staging point between northern routes and the Dnieper basin.
Kievan Rus': A medieval polity centered on Kyiv that connected many East Slavic lands from the ninth to the thirteenth century. Its political and commercial centers controlled much of the route’s southern and middle reaches.
